Summary

Reporting to the Lead, Underwriting, the Senior Underwriter is responsible for assisting HIROC in achieving its goal of maintaining cost-effective, sustainable, responsive insurance coverage. As a subject-matter expert, the Senior Underwriter is relied on to support the team on complex coverage matters and plays a critical role in executing HIROC's underwriting manual and methodology.

Key Responsibilities

  • Remain up to date on the HIROC policy wording and coverage implications.
  • Provide guidance, mentoring and support to the Insurance Services team and other departments with respect to the HIROC coverage.
  • Support Subscribers on complex matters such as coverage determinations, contract reviews, indemnity provisions, etc.
  • Liaise with HIROC’s Claims team on new and outstanding claims and provide advocacy when required
  • Communicate to staff members any changes to the HIROC policy or underwriting procedures.
  • Analyze and assess new business opportunities, and determine premium for liability, crime, and property insurance according to underwriting guidelines.
  • Review and prepare endorsements for Subscribers according to underwriting guidelines. As needed, review and prepare manuscript wordings.
  • Review and analyze any changes in operations, claims experience, etc. for Subscribers on renewal, and provide recommendations on premium allocation.
  • As needed, review and make recommendations for new business and renewal applications/ surveys.
  • Work with Lead, Client Systems and Reporting to understand underwriting and coding information required for the issuance of new policies.
  • Provide the Client Systems team with the appropriate documentation to process policy changes and new business transactions.
  • Support the design and implementation of Underwriting strategies and guidelines, in line with technical standards.
  • Utilize advanced analytics and historical data, and scenario planning to make informed underwriting decisions.
  • Participate in HIROC’s Coverage Review Committee to ensure that the HIROC policy remains competitive and responsive to Subscribers’ needs.
  • Work with internal staff and external coverage counsel to recommend updates, modification to the HIROC Policy and participate in drafting revised policy wordings.
  • Review and recommend updates to rating methodologies and underwriting practices to ensure they are competitive and appropriate.
  • As required, prepare information requested by actuaries, reinsurers, and other external stakeholders.
  • Participate in discussions with actuaries and assist Lead, Underwriting with renewal negotiations as needed.
  • Keep up to date of industry trends, market conditions and regulatory developments to identify emerging risks and opportunities. Stay informed on issues related to HIROC's market.
  • Participate in initiatives that promote better management of health care issues.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Education, Training & Experience 

  • Completed post-secondary education at the Bachelor level and 5 years of related work experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Insurance industry designations such as CIP/FCIP, CRM, RPLU.
  • Preferably, candidate would have experience in specialty lines such as healthcare, life sciences or cyber.
  • Valid Ontario driver’s license and access to a vehicle preferred. 

Working Conditions

  • Normal working conditions in an office setting. Working at computer for most of the day.  
  • Hybrid work model.  

Hours of Work

  • Monday – Friday 8:30am-4:30pm, some flexible hours may be required to meet Subscriber needs.
  • Travel as required.
  • May be required to attend-after-hours functions/meetings.
