At HIROC, our expert staff take great pride in knowing how to address and provide comprehensive solutions for the unique challenges our Subscribers face in healthcare settings.

When it comes to today’s complex and ever-evolving cyber landscape, we know how important it is to stay current on the latest trends and be prepared to fend off a potential cyber-attack.

With the start of October marking Cybersecurity Awareness Month, we asked our staff to highlight the cyber-related resources they most often recommend to Subscribers that help them strengthen their emergency plans, better understand cybersecurity, and ultimately increase safety and improve patient care.

In the spirit of spreading awareness and building resilience, please check out these resources below and share them widely at your organization:

1) Guide: Hosting a Successful Cyber Breach Tabletop Exercise

“I like recommending our guide for Hosting a Successful Cyber Breach Tabletop Exercise that we created for our Subscribers,” said Kopiha Nathan, HIROC’s Privacy and Compliance Officer. “My experience working with HIROC’s leadership team, as well as Subscriber senior management and board members, has shown that tabletop exercises are extremely valuable in preparing an organization to respond to potential cybersecurity breaches.”

Nathan emphasized how these tabletop sessions bring key stakeholders and the leadership team together to discuss hypothetical scenarios while reviewing their cyber breach incident response plan.

“The collaborative nature of these exercises aids in the alignment of resources, expectations, and accountability while identifying opportunities for improvement. I find this to be a helpful tool for IT leaders who may have never facilitated a tabletop exercise before, as it provides clear guidelines on building a successful one.”

2) Privileged Access Management: A Critical Element of Internal Cyber Security

“Having personally been through a SOC 2 audit at HIROC, I learned how important privileged access management is to cybersecurity,” said Sara Chow, Senior Underwriter at HIROC. “This resource, created in collaboration with Brit Insurance, explains why. It includes a stat that can sum up an approach to handling today’s cyber-related issues, ‘Those who eliminate standing privileges will experience 80 percent fewer privileged breaches than those that don’t.’”

3) Planning for Cyber Security Incidents: A Crisis Communications Guide

“One key phrase that’s been constantly repeated at cybersecurity conferences I’ve attended over the years is ‘It’s not if, but when,’” said Marc Aiello, Communications and Marketing Specialist at HIROC. “With this guide, healthcare organizations can include a strong communications factor to their emergency planning so that they can better manage a crisis and maintain the trust of their key stakeholders.”

4) Cyber Attacks and the Risk to Critical Infrastructure

“I find this resource to be very helpful, not only to share with our Subscribers when needed but also for my own understanding,” said Jey Sivaprasad, Senior Account Executive at HIROC. “The document, authored in collaboration with our partners at Brit Insurance, touches on risk to critical infrastructure from cyber-attacks in key sectors, the risk of running legacy systems, and a brief look into a safer future. The simple two-page document indicates the importance for organizations to focus more on becoming cyber-ready.”
