The Importance of Early Reporting - We're Here For You!

We sat down with HIROC’s Claims Team to spotlight the value of the early reporting process.

Why is early reporting important?

Reporting early allows the team at HIROC to become involved at the outset. It gives us the opportunity to investigate and interview staff involved in care while information is fresh, and who may not be with the organization years later. While the scope of each investigation is dependent on the specific facts giving rise to the potential or actual claim, in the majority of cases, the investigation will require the collection and preservation of evidence, which is always easier to navigate in real time. This upfront work in assessing potential liability risk better prepares us to represent our Subscribers in the event that a statement of claim is issued.

What does early reporting look like?

Please fill out the Reporting Claims Form and submit it to [email protected]

When doing so, please think of W5H. Who is this claimant? What happened? Where and when did the incident occur? Explain why you are reporting the incident, and how HIROC can assist. We encourage you to also include any supporting details that may assist in understanding the merits of the claim (ie: incident report, complaint letter, statement of claim, etc.)

If I reach out to HIROC to report, will it affect our premium?

This is a misconception we often hear. The number of claims reported does not impact the Subscribers loss ratio or premium. In addition, HIROC’s Claims Team is very careful to determine whether the matter needs to be opened as a claim, and is then conservative about what reserves need to be set.

If Subscribers are unsure to report something, who can they contact?

If you have any questions about whether to report a claim or what form to use, please contact the HIROC Claims Department at 416-733-2773 or 1-800-465-7358. Alternatively, you may reach out to [email protected].
