Power interruptions in cold weather can lead to freezing hazards. Use the proactive steps below to minimize damage:
Minimize heat loss
- Ensure all doors, windows, shutters, and dampers are securely closed to retain heat.
- If backup electric power is not available, make arrangements to obtain portable heating units which do not require electric power.
Protect piping
- Protect piping systems from freezing by conducting thorough inspections to identify potential freeze risks.
- Ensure that heat tracing is active and functional, and have a backup power source ready to maintain heat tracing during outages.
Remove snow and ice
- Check snow removal equipment and contractors.
- Plan for roof clearing if needed.
Anticipate flooding
- If severe cold could cause flooding, relocate susceptible equipment or stock to an alternate location.
- Check operation of pumps or other dewatering equipment.
Emergency communications
- Collect and circulate emergency contact numbers and distribute them organization-wide.
In an unpredictable world, preparing for the loss of essential services is crucial. Developing and testing contingency plans for power outages, fuel shortages, communication breakdowns, or flood risks can minimize operational impacts and safeguard your assets.
