HIROC’s Risk Management Residency Program is Growing

See one, do one, teach one. When it comes down to it, Wendy Hooper says this is what HIROC’s Risk Management Residency Program (RMRP) is all about.

In just five short years, the RMRP has seen 147 healthcare graduates from across Canada build confidence and competence through the program. And while there are many things about the RMRP that are unique—such as the small cohort size for optimal learning, the pairing of each student with a mentor, and the culture of collaboration and networking—it’s the fact that the program is offered at no cost and exclusively for HIROC Subscribers that sets it apart. That’s the HIROC advantage.

HIROC’s Hooper, a Senior Healthcare Risk Management Specialist, and Trevor Hall, VP Healthcare Safety and Risk Management, recently sat down to chat about the program.

Hall says one reason the program is so critical is it is one part of addressing healthcare human resources challenges. As people leave the field, they take with them their experiences, skills and knowledge, so HIROC’s RMRP builds connections and embeds shared knowledge to support collective growth.

Seeing the success and interest in the foundational RMRP, in January 2025 we expanded the program and welcomed the first cohort of the Midwifery RMRP with 34 graduates.

Building on that, this January HIROC is offering two specialty streams of the program: the Midwifery RMRP and the Obstetrical and Perinatal RMRP. Applications are now open for both programs.

Who Should Apply

What’s exciting about these two specialized streams, share Hall and Hooper, is that they are truly meant for professionals who are working in the obstetrical and perinatal field, whether as an individual practitioner or those supporting the frontline clinicians in the obstetrical programs throughout healthcare (managers, directors, professional practice leads, etc.). These individuals may not necessarily hold a “risk” title, but they directly influence and mitigate risk events from occurring.

Hall shared a few of the themes that students of the two streams will learn about: documentation, health equity and safety, consent, critical incident investigation, and more. For the full picture, head over to the program links above.

“The most important piece is that we create that knowledge, that community of experts,” said Hall.
