HIROC is proud of our work to support you, our Subscribers. Your needs continue to guide HIROC’s strategy, and we aim to actively listen to what you value, in turn driving impact where you want to see it.

We took a closer look at the highlights over the past year from our programs, events, and other initiatives for Subscribers in our brand new 2024 Annual Review—check it out!

HIROC recently hosted another successful Annual General Meeting and Conference. Addressing Subscribers, our CEO Catherine Gaulton and Board Chair Dr. David Pichora spoke more about our guiding principles and commitment to the healthcare community.

A message from our CEO and Board Chair

Created 38 years ago by 53 Ontario hospitals as a made-in-Canada solution, HIROC has grown to be the primary provider of coverage for a broad cross-section of Canada’s healthcare community. Our reach spans coast to coast to coast. And our objectives have remained the same: to meet the unique needs of Subscribers and to partner to create the safest healthcare system.

This emphasis on patient and system safety is unique to our organization and relies on a community of change makers who are resilient, resourceful, and value learning from one another.

What guides HIROC’s work?

  • We maintain our fundamental role in healthcare insurance by staying up to date on the market and your needs to provide comprehensive, responsive and sustainable coverage.
  • Our expertise in insurance, risk, safety, finance and claims make us the go-to resource for our Subscribers, policymakers, funders and other stakeholders.
  • Relationships with our Subscribers are paramount—your voice matters, and decisions made are based on what you share with us. These relationships are strengthened through a variety of complimentary learning opportunities, valuable tools and resources, shared lessons learned, and podcasts.
  • We are here to serve our Subscribers and those you serve. Our vision of partnering to create the safest healthcare system and mission of providing insurance and risk management solutions to support safety and collaboration in healthcare reinforce this commitment.

What do our Subscribers value most?

  • Expertise
  • Product quality
  • Responsiveness
  • Risk reduction
  • Stability
  • Acceptable and sustainable price
  • Data to meet their financial, safety and risk reduction objectives
  • Innovation

Here are a few ways we’ve brought these values to life for you.

Did you know HIROC has a Subscriber Advisory Council (SAC)? This is a group of HIROC Subscribers whose input helps us understand what you need and what’s top-of-mind in healthcare.

Recently, SAC members told us how staffing and violence in the workplace are challenges they are facing. To address these, HIROC formed a health human resources committee of Subscribers and created a series on risk reduction in these areas.

We also know the topic of cyber keeps you up at night, so we continue to host virtual cyber forums to share learnings and expertise in cyber security.

On the innovation front, through the HIROC Foundation’s Safety Grants Program, we continue to see your true ingenuity in action. Our goal is to seed funding or in-kind support so you can pursue these important initiatives and then share those lessons learned. And new in 2025 we are launching a two-year Collaborate Safety Grant that Subscribers can apply for, in addition to our original Cultivate Safety Grant. Stay informed on these grants via our Safety Grants Program page.

We’re amazed to see how Subscribers across the country are learning and scaling past grant work in their respective regions. And soon to arrive is HIROC’s brand-new podcast, Share, Scale, Repeat, that revolves around the stories and successes of past grant winners.

Thank you for being actively engaged in the HIROC community and for your steadfast support of our vision, mission and values. Having a north star grounds the work we do.
