HIROC Leans Into the Art of Safety

As of January 1, HIROC officially launches its new 2026-2028 Strategic Plan – a plan we’re calling The Art of Safety

As you can guess, this plan came to life slowly over the last year, with our Board of Directors and Subscribers telling us what matters most: Service, Safer Systems, as well as Stability & Sustainability

But there’s one more “S” that is essential to the plan – Staff Support. We wouldn’t be anywhere without the dedication of team HIROC.

These have become the four pillars of The Art of Safety.

Why “The Art of Safety”

Subscribers will notice our new plan pulls from both the art and healthcare worlds. This is our way of saying that each person in the Canadian healthcare system has unique skills and talents that are valued, but most importantly, each is a gifted professional (or better yet, a unique artist) who is there for their community.

What We Learn From the Art World

Many have written about how art is central to understanding the human experience, how art can provide valuable insights into innovation, leadership, and strategy.

As our healthcare system evolves and solutions to complex safety concerns become more important than ever, we must look to the world around us. We need to see things differently.

Like an artist who experiments with different mediums, or who pulls from past traditions, healthcare teams are always learning, failing fast, and innovating for the health and safety of the Canadians they serve.

This is, as we see it, the Art of Safety.

Check Out Our Gallery Wall

More than just words, every element of HIROC’s Strategic Plan is filled with art – right down to the unique typography. We’ve even curated a special gallery wall at our Toronto office, a place to hang many of the images that inspire and drive the four pillars of our plan.

We’re asking staff to share their favourite works of art from the plan, here is what our CEO, Catherine Gaulton had to say about her chosen piece, related to the Service pillar of our plan.

Share With Us

Aside from the intersects of art, safety, and business, we also know art is central to healing in healthcare, adorning many walls in our Subscriber organizations to provide hope, inspiration, and a sense of calm to those who seek care. Like at Orillia Soldiers’ Memorial Hospital where their team recently posted about the artwork in their oncology department.

As we settle in with our new plan, we also want to know how art plays a role in your organization. If you have a story or photos to share with us, email [email protected]. We’d love to hear from you.
