Bold: HIROC 2018 Year in Review

In the past year, HIROC‘s mission was to be bolder than ever before. In our 2018 Year in Review, this theme runs deep.

Released on April 29, our 2018 Year in Review profiles the path HIROC and its subscribers took over the course of the year. “The past year was quite an interesting one,” said HIROC’s CEO Catherine Gaulton (page 2). “One constant for each of us, has been the focus we maintain on safety.”

The 2018 Year in Review places a focus on numbers – not just the financials (which start on page 13) but also things like HIROC’s Safety Grants Program.

Partnering for Safety

In 2018, the Safety Grants Program received 143 innovative proposals from HIROC subscribers. Six grants were ultimately awarded, for a total of $120,000 going back to the healthcare system.

Grants were awarded to the following project proposals:

  • Improving transitions in care from hospital to community (Arnprior Regional Health)
  • Early warning score and escalation plan implementation (Central Health)
  • Implementation of a cultural change intervention in a hospital mental health program to improve staff and patient safety by preventing incidences of conflict and violence (Hôpital Montfort)
  • Improving outcomes through recognition, communication and treatment of sepsis (Scarborough Health Network)
  • Creating a safe work environment for Personal Support Workers caring for clients with cognitive impairment (VHA Home HealthCare)
  • Walking the talk, improving organizational safety culture through executive patient safety rounds (William Osler Health System)

More information on the Safety Grants Program can be found on HIROC.com under About Us.

Making an Impact

The 2018 Year in Review also speaks to the success we’ve seen through projects like HIROC’s Healthcare Change Makers podcast. The podcast features interviews with healthcare leaders from across Canada – it has over 3,500 downloads and 12 episodes. Healthcare Change Makers can be streamed on HIROC’s website or via your preferred podcast app.

Thinking Big, Being Bold

When we say big, we mean it. The Year in Review offers a sneak peek at HIROC’s new strategic plan – 2020 and Beyond. On page 9, check out our new strategic priorities.

The HIROC team would like to thank our supportive board, as well as our valued partners and subscribers for working closely with us throughout 2018. “None of what we accomplished together would have been possible without it,” said Gaulton.
