Strengthening Resilience within HIROC! HIROC recognizes the importance of fostering a culture of resilience within our organization to safeguard both our valued community and our operations so we can continue to serve Subscribers. Up next in our Committee Spotlight series is our Resilience Committee! We sat down with committee co-chairs Lori Borovoy and Marc Aiello to learn more about the committee’s initiatives and its integral role in ensuring HIROC remains equipped to navigate any crisis or emergency. Here's what they said: WHAT IS THIS COMMITTEE'S PURPOSE? WHY WAS IT CREATED? The purpose of our Resilience Committee is to promote a safe, sustainable, and resilient community within our organization by leveraging our strengths to build capacity and resources for emergency preparedness. It was created to ensure that HIROC is well-prepared to effectively respond to and manage crises and emergencies that could potentially impact our people and organization. HOW DOES THE COMMITTEE ALIGN WITH HIROC'S STRATEGY? It aligns with HIROC's strategy by proactively managing and identifying potential risks and implementing measures to enhance organizational resilience. Through plans like our Crisis Response Guides, which are categorized by theme, contact management and communication strategies, and collaboration with key stakeholders, we ensure HIROC is well-prepared to manage internal crises and emergencies effectively. WHAT IS THE COMMITTEE MOST PROUD OF? We take pride in our ongoing training and awareness initiatives that equip both our management and staff to respond effectively to emergencies. For example, we recently gathered HIROC’s leadership team to conduct a tabletop simulation exercise focused on a cyber-attack. It was a phenomenal opportunity to test our current emergency plans through role-play and develop ideas to make adjustments and improvements. “Practice your plans” is a saying we truly believe in and promote at HIROC, and as a committee, we make sure there are actions behind this saying. IS THERE ANYTHING YOU'VE LEARNED WHILE BEING ON THE COMMITTEE? As co-chairs, we’ve learned a great deal about the value of collaboration. Working alongside our incredible colleagues on the committee has provided us with insights into their diverse expertise and dedication to ensuring HIROC's resilience. “A key component of HIROC’s culture is our philosophy toward preparedness, and the Resilience Committee embodies that,” said Trevor Hall, VP of Healthcare Safety and Risk Management, and executive sponsor of the committee. “Our commitment to resilience, both internally and externally, ensures we remain a trusted and relevant partner in risk capable of supporting our Subscribers during periods of emergency and urgency.” HIROC's Resilience Committee also includes Christina Giannone, CHRL, Duke Nguyen, Kopiha Nathan, CISM, CIPT, Angela Kidston, CAPM, Laurie Sidoti, Samaneh Ranjbar, and Anne Fortin.

Workplace Violence Affects All Sectors.   HIROC's Nataly Farshait, Director of Healthcare Safety and Risk Management shares her thoughts below on how HIROC is ready to support Subscribers - ensuring a safe space for patients, their families, and all healthcare professionals.    We encourage employers to develop comprehensive Workplace Violence Prevention (WPV) programs tailored to their specific workplace dynamics.   By understanding the different types of workplace violence and the relevant legislation and resources, employers can take proactive steps to create safer work environments for everyone.   Here’s four types of workplace violence:   Type 1: Criminal Intent This type involves violence committed by individuals who have no legitimate relationship with the workplace but enter with criminal intent. Canadian employers must take measures to prevent such incidents under occupational health and safety legislation.   Type 2: Patient or Client Patient or client violence occurs when individuals receiving care become violent towards employees. It's essential for employers to have policies and procedures in place to mitigate these risks, as outlined in occupational health and safety regulations.   Type 3: Worker on Worker This involves violence between co-workers or existing staff and former employees. Canadian labour laws and human rights legislation mandate employers to prevent and address harassment, bullying, and other forms of interpersonal conflict in the workplace.   Type 4: Personal Relationship When violence occurs in the workplace due to personal relationships outside of work, it falls under this category. With HHR top of mind for many, we’ve shared learnings about the factors affecting nurse retention and practical recommendations for improvement. It was great to hear from experts, including Nathan Banda, on these issues at the Canadian Rural & Northern Healthcare Leadership Conference hosted by Spark Conferences. Nathan shared his research on nurse retention in rural Canada and identified the top factors affecting nurses’ intention to stay at their jobs (NITS) and nurses’ intention to leave (NITL), and he shared practical recommendations to tackle the NITL factors.
