Summary

HIROC has a record of over 99% Subscriber retention and has also benefited from substantive growth. With that in mind, HIROC is committed to growing its financial leadership team to meet the increasing and more diverse needs of its Subscribers and to maintain and enhance its best-in-class leadership capacity. This role will initially report into and work closely with HIROC’s Executive Vice President, Finance Operations, who has over 30 years of experience with the organization and will be transitioning onto other roles and responsibilities in the organization. This transition will lead the Vice President, Finance role to report directly to the Chief Executive Officer.

As the leader of the Finance team, the successful candidate will be responsible for leading a stellar team of financial professionals to accomplish all HIROC Group Entities’ financial strategy, oversight and reporting objectives. The candidate will be a member of HIROC’s senior leadership team and contribute to the development of the organization’s strategic and operational plans and objectives. Members of HIROC’s leadership team lead their respective departments and also have direct accountability for the leadership of HIROC as a whole.

With these significant leadership opportunities and accountabilities, the successful candidate will have demonstrated effective people and leadership skills and aptitude, excellent communication skills and be a self-starter who enjoys working in a fast-paced environment. The ideal candidate will be comfortable operating in a mid-sized agile organization, is process-oriented, and has a strong finance/accounting foundation, preferably with Insurance industry experience.

Key Responsibilities

The successful candidate will, in addition to their general leadership, strategy and oversight roles, provide financial reporting and advisory support to internal and external stakeholders.
Responsibilities include:

  • Oversight and accountability for financial statement reporting and annual audit requirements
  • Liaising with external auditors, actuaries, reinsurers, investment managers, HIROC’s board of directors and our Subscribers
  • Oversight and accountability in relation to financial systems, capital management, investment reporting, budgeting, internal audit, special programs, monitoring and reporting progress of financial and operational targets.
  • Other special projects and responsibilities as may arise to achieve HIROC’s strategic goals.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

The successful candidate will have:

  • Demonstrated leadership initiative and have a desire to learn and develop in a collaborative, team-oriented environment.
  • The ability to partner and communicate effectively with various stakeholders such as the senior leadership group, auditors, actuaries, external investment managers, regulators, boards of directors and Subscribers.
  • Executive presence with polished and well developed written and oral communication skills
  • Experience liaising with Board of Directors, including knowledge and experience governance best practice standards
  • Interpersonal skills, including relationship-building skills with clients and co- workers
  • Strong business acumen, strategic planning, organizational, and creative thinking skills
  • Passion for creating the safest healthcare system possible for Canadians

Education, Training & Experience

  • Bachelor’s Degree in finance, accounting, business administration or a related field (Masters in Business Administration would be preferred). Consideration will be given to candidates that have an equivalent mix of education, experience and expertise
  • 8+ years of managerial experience
  • At least 10+ years of progressive work experience in accounting/finance functions or equivalent experience;
  • Certifications such as CPA, CFA, MBA are preferred
  • Experience in the Insurance industry is strongly preferred (either directly with an insurance company or in public accounting focused on Insurance engagements) with knowledge and competence in strategic planning, operations management, leading teams, financial reporting.

Working Conditions

  • Monday-Friday 8:30-16:30 ET
  • Working at a computer for much of the day
  • Hybrid working model
  • May be required to attend after-hours functions/meetings.
  • Some inter and intra-provincial travel required—Subscriber visits, presentations, conferences and courses. Valid Driver's Licence and access to a vehicle preferred
