Reporting to the Director, Healthcare Safety and Risk Management (HSRM), the Lead, Risk will provide value to HIROC Subscribers by leading a highly engaged team of experts and will support the Canadian healthcare system by operationalizing key risk management programs and services. 

The Lead, Risk will support the Director of HSRM and work collaboratively with HIROC Leadership and the whole of HIROC to ensure the accomplishment of HIROC’s strategic objectives.

Duties and Responsibilities

Lead direct reports and daily risk team operations 

  • Lead the risk team direct reports and manage risk team daily operations
  • Actively listen and engage with the team through coaching and mentoring.
  • Demonstrate and create psychological safety (i.e., staff engagement and department culture).
  • Provide line management of the Risk Management team, including individual and team development, performance reviews, compensation, motivation, and well-being.
  • Participate in ongoing educational opportunities to remain current on risk management issues in the field of healthcare and insurance
  • Collaborative Leadership with HIROC’s Leads, Directors and Other Leaders in the development of, planning for and accomplishment of departmental and HIROC-wide strategies including without limitation its strategic plan and resulting annual plans and budgets
  • Participate in/lead ad hoc HIROC projects, initiatives and committees
  • In collaboration with the Lead, Special Operations and Lead, Safety, act as the Director of Healthcare Safety and Risk Management in their absence
  • Other duties as required   

Lead subscriber experience and stewardship

  • Support HIROC Subscribers including query response, customized claims analysis, meeting preparation and attendance, Risk Assessment Checklists and Risk Register program support.
  • Act as a HIROC representative while delivering presentations, participating on external committees and liaising with other organizations.
  • Build capacity and value for Subscribers in the areas of risk management.

Action wise practices with Subscribers

  • With Subscribers, co-design experiences and action wise practices (i.e., risk initiatives and practices).
  • Leverage HIROC claim information and HIROC Intelligence to action safety and support Subscribers 
  • Develop new products, services and approaches to support Subscribers (i.e., services and tools, etc.).

Conduct research and academic activity

  • Create new knowledge and contribute to academic activities (e.g., peer-reviewed papers, posters, presentations, etc.).
  • Recruit and provide leadership oversight and opportunities to students.
  • Collaborate and create strategic partnership with industry/peers.
  • Keep up to date with emerging areas of safety and risk and share back with HIROC and Subscribers.

Skills and Attributes Required

  • Ability to remain calm and supportive when dealing with sensitive and high-risk subject matter. 
  • Demonstrated leadership capabilities, providing extensive examples of kindness and team empowerment. 
  • Well organized, with excellent time management skills, the ability to meet or exceed deadlines.
  • Committed to ongoing learning and providing opportunities to HIROC and Subscribers. 
  • Valid driver's licence and access to a vehicle

Education, Training & Experience

  • University education at a Bachelor level, Masters Level would be considered an asset 
  • Preferred certification and/or significant applied experience in risk management. 
  • Minimum five years of recent healthcare-related experience.
  • Preferred:
    • Extensive experience in risk management, patient safety and/or quality improvement
    • Advanced acumen in risk governance (e.g., supporting boards)
  • Consideration will be given to candidates who have an equivalent mix of education, experience and expertise.

Hours of Work

Monday-Friday 8:30-16:30 ET
May be required to attend after-hours functions/meetings.

Working Conditions

Normal working conditions in an office setting. Working at computer for most of the day. Some inter and intra provincial travel required—Subscriber visits, presentations, conferences and courses. Hybrid work model.
