Summary

The Data Scientist plays a key role in transforming HIROC’s data into information and knowledge. They lead the delivery of high-quality analytics deliverables, such as in-depth descriptive and statistical analyses and predictive data models. The Data Scientist has broad and deep relationships with business stakeholders, enabling them to understand and anticipate the analytical needs of HIROC’s staff and subscribers, and owns the end-to-end analytics lifecycle to ensure those needs are consistently met or exceeded.

Key Responsibilities

  • Work across the analytics lifecycle to analyze, design, build, test, and implement descriptive, diagnostic, predictive, and prescriptive analyses as required by business need
  • Implement, maintain, and deploy robust analytics deliverables, including predictive models
  • Lead definition and documentation of business requirements for analytics deliverables, ensuring internal and external stakeholder needs are understood in depth
  • Ensure the needs of stakeholders are met or exceeded with regards to data and analytics projects
  • Apply design principles and data analytics expertise to select the right approaches to meet business needs, such as data visualizations, statistical tests, and data algorithms
  • Manage and respond to ad-hoc requests and inquiries regarding data analysis and data science
  • Participate in and contribute to a data governance strategy to advance the use and impact of HIROC’s data assets
  • Ensure data assets and computing environments at HIROC are managed in adherence with security and privacy requirements
  • Maintain current knowledge about analytical techniques, statistical and data visualization software, health systems research, and stakeholder information needs
  • Mentor and guide other members of the team in analytics tasks

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Strong knowledge and hands-on experience with using relational databases and data warehouses (Microsoft SQL, Oracle)
  • Strong knowledge of data science tools, such as Python, pandas, NumPy, scikitlearn, and TensorFlow
  • Experience with a broad range of analytical and statistical techniques and methodologies
  • Excellent understanding of statistical and machine learning techniques and algorithms, such as k-NN, SVM, Decision Trees, deep learning, etc.
  • Strong knowledge of techniques for feature selection, model optimization, and hyperparameter tuning
  • A proven track record of designing, developing, delivering, and maintaining high-quality analytics projects that drive business success
  • Strong knowledge of data management fundamentals and data governance principles
  • Strong problem-solving skills and ability to answer business questions by applying appropriate analytical techniques
  • Strong customer focus and ability to form broad stakeholder relationships
  • Excellent visual design skills to optimally communicate data insights
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to clearly explain technical terms to non-technical audiences
  • Familiarity with big data and cloud technologies is a plus, for example Apache Spark and data lake architecture
  • Excellent task management skills, well organized and able to meet deadlines, scheduling
  • Healthcare and/or insurance industry experience is preferred

Education, Training & Experience

  • To be successful in this role, you will possess a University degree in the field of Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics or a related data-driven discipline
  • Most importantly, you are an enthusiastic and creative thinker, who is constantly driving performance improvement and are passionate about creating the safest healthcare system possible for Canadians
