Overview

HIROC risk management services are unequalled in the Canadian market. Our professional risk management staff provides advisory services to subscribers and members looking for definitive guidance, from a risk management perspective, on a broad range of clinical and operational issues. We regularly critique and advise on policy issues, loss control and patient relations issues, to name just a few. HIROC’s input is highly valued by our subscribers and our members.

HIROC publishes The HIROC Connection four times per year. This newsletter addresses current risk management issues facing Canadian healthcare organizations as well as articles relating to Claims Management and Insurance Operations. Articles are drawn from legal counsel, adjusters, from our own staff and from our subscribers. The Connection is archived and indexed on our website, allowing subscribers and member’s easy access to articles from back copies.

Our staff regularly provide in-house education for subscriber staff, management and governing boards, in addition to our participation in larger educational forums such as those offered by the Ontario Hospital Association, the Canadian Healthcare Association, The Canadian Institute, The Conference Board of Canada, etc. We also co-sponsor a variety of risk management related conferences and workshops, including those produced by the Ontario Hospital Association, the CQI Institute and the Canadian College of Health Services Executives. We currently use the Ontario Telemedicine Network (with connections to telemedicine networks across Canada) for videoconferencing.

Our Risk Management Department is well placed to facilitate sharing and participates as part of an active Canadian risk management networking group. HIROC hosts the archives of the networking group. We also participate in a variety of patient safety related initiatives through Accreditation Canada (formerly known as the Canadian Council on Health Services Accreditation), the Canadian Patient Safety Institute, the Ontario Ministry of Health and Long Term Care, the Ontario Hospital Association and Health Canada. We are a voting member of the Canadian Patient Safety Institute, a key sponsor of the Safer Healthcare Now initiative and sponsor of the ISMP Canada Safety Bulletin.

We believe strongly that risk management is everyone’s business, and we encourage management to support good risk management practices throughout the organization.
