Our History

Following the insurance crisis of 1984-1985, the Ontario Hospital Association commissioned two independent consultant's reports, both of which recommended the formation of an insurance reciprocal exchange. The Reciprocal was subsequently founded in 1987 to provide healthcare organizations with a stable, financially sound and practical alternative to meet their liability insurance needs.

Starting with 52 hospitals in Ontario, the Reciprocal has expanded to encompass healthcare facilities across Canada. Hospitals, nursing homes, community health centres, home care and other healthcare organizations make up the more than 350 HIROC subscribers, representing over 500 facilities in Canada.
