Ontario Hospital Association delivers conference targeting latest developments in medical devices
Garner practical tips about managing risk, liability exposure in reprocessing

Stay in tune with a variety of current issues surrounding medical devices by attending an upcoming conference in Toronto.

The Ontario Hospital Association (OHA) presents Medical Devices on Monday, March 22 at the Marriott Eaton Centre Hotel, 525 Bay St. in Toronto. The Healthcare Insurance Reciprocal of Canada (HIROC) is sponsoring the event.

"A number of new developments set the stage for this year’s conference in Toronto," the OHA says.

"Find out from experts in all areas of the medical devices sphere what these developments mean to you and your organization."

Stephen Dibert, president and CEO of MEDEC, will discuss the latest Health Canada requirements and industry code of conduct for healthcare professionals.

Meanwhile, Sarah Chandler, acting head of the Regulatory and Scientific Section Device Licensing Services Division, Medical Devices Bureau, Health Canada, will provide clarity about the recent classification of patient management software as a medical device.

The event's feature speaker, Dr. Michelle Alfa, will address the key issues surrounding the reprocessing of single-use implantable components that are part of surgical instrument sets. Alfa is the medical director of the Microbiology Discipline Diagnostic Services of Manitoba, St. Boniface General Hospital.

In addition, Allison Philpot, project manager, Partnerships & Project Management for
Accreditation Canada, will discuss the core Qmentum reprocessing and sterilization standards and results from the first year of their usage in Ontario and across the country. She will also highlight the new Reprocessing & Sterilization Distinction program launching this spring.

Participants will hear from Alex Szabo, a risk management specialist at HIROC, and Tim Buckley, partner at Borden Ladner Gervais LLP. They will be sharing practical tips and case studies about managing risk and liability exposure in reprocessing.
