HIROC, ISMP Canada announce expansion of working relationship
Organizations join forces to enhance patient safety in Canada

In an effort to improve patient safety and efficiency in healthcare organizations across the country, the Healthcare Insurance Reciprocal of Canada (HIROC) and the Institute for Safe Medication Practices Canada (ISMP Canada) have announced the formal extension of their working relationship.

Because HIROC and ISMP Canada share the same philosophy and vision of patient safety, HIROC CEO Peter Flattery says it makes sense that the two organizations come together for the benefit of healthcare organizations and patients.

“We see ISMP as a key partner in helping us move towards our vision of creating the safest healthcare system. Formalizing the relationship is a key to that and we look forward to how we can make this happen,” Flattery says.

Sylvia Hyland, vice-president of ISMP Canada, agrees that collaboration is important for the development of safe healthcare systems.

“ISMP Canada is very pleased about the new strategic partnership with HIROC,” Hyland says. “HIROC is a respected leader in providing healthcare insurance and risk management programs.”

A major initiative stemming from the announcement is a collaborative review of medication related claim data with the aim of improving the content and level of information received.

Hyland says this initiative draws upon expertise from both organizations and will help optimize learning in the development of preventative strategies.

Flattery says he’s spoken with ISMP Canada president and CEO David U and the two have agreed to meet regularly beginning in September to review what’s happening and to identify future opportunities.

Other initiatives announced as part of the partnership may include:

  • Promotion of ISMP Canada services to HIROC subscribers following claims resolution
  • HIROC sponsorship and/or financial support for higher profile reviews
  • Joint marketing and participation at conferences and events
  • Investigate joint venture opportunities
  • HIROC’s continued support and profile for ISMP Canada Safety Bulletin.
