The HIROC Advantage
Healthcare Insurance Reciprocal of Canada was established in 1987 in response to the sharp increase in premiums for liability insurance. Fifty-two healthcare organizations in Ontario came together to form an insurance reciprocal exchange, an arrangement whereby members, called subscribers, that are in the same business that agree to share in each other’s losses.
HIROC is owned and controlled by its subscribers. The Board of Directors is elected by subscribers to represent the various types of organizations, sizes and geographical locations of HIROC’s members.
As a not-for-profit organization, HIROC does not pay income tax, broker or agent commissions and any profit, or excess surplus, is returned to subscribers. Since 1987, we have returned over $70 million to our subscribers.
HIROC has grown to become the largest liability insurance organization in Canada to provide service exclusively to not-for-profit healthcare organizations.
